Leaf Structures
2
Internal Structures chloroplast Cuticle [Green]- waxy layer on outer surface of leaf, helps keep water inside leaf Upper and Lower Epidermis [Red]- protect internal tissues from water loss Stoma [Orange]- openings in the lower epidermis that allow carbon dioxide into and oxygen, water out of leaf Guard Cell [Blue]- surround a stoma and open and close to regulate the amount of water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide present
3
Mesophyll- two layers located between upper and lower
chloroplast Mesophyll- two layers located between upper and lower epidermis, area where photosynthesis occurs Palisade Cells [Yellow]- columns of cells containing chloroplasts which are used to capture energy from the sun Spongy Layer- consists of randomly scattered cells containing chloroplasts and air pockets - important for the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen
4
Vein- consists of xylem, phloem, and supporting tissue
Xylem [Pink]- carry water and minerals upward from roots Phloem [Purple]- transports glucose out of leaf
5
External Features Blade- broad flat part of leaf Veins Blade Petiole
Petiole- the stem section of a leaf
