Distance-time graphs Mr. Lambert Integrated Science 1A Trimester 2, 2014
2
Bell Ringer Draw a distance-time graph that depicts the motion of the man: A man is doing an exercise where he sprints 100 meters forwards and then sprints 50 meters backwards. He does this two times, stops to take a break, and then walks back to his starting point.

7
Kelsey walked 90 meters in 10 seconds. What was her average speed?
9 m/s
8
Sarah swam 500m in 30 sec. How many meters per second did she swim?
16.7 m/s
9
James was training to be on the football team
James was training to be on the football team. He would time himself as he ran around his neighborhood. He knew his neighborhood was 1 Km long and could run around it in 60s. What was his average speed? 0.017 km/s
10
“Sketch that Graph” Follow the 3 steps: Draw the x-axis and y- axis
Label the x-axis as time, and the y-axis as distance Sketch the graph!
11
“Sketch that Graph” #1 Jessie left the house and walked to the movies at a slow leisurely pace. She stayed for the movie, then began walking home again at a leisurely pace. Half way home it began to pour, so she ran the rest of the way home. Sketch the graph of her motion.
12
“Sketch that Graph” #2 A jogger runs for 10 minutes at 3.5 mph, for 45 minutes at 6 mph and cools down for 5 minutes at 2.5 mph. Sketch a graph of the joggers horizontal motion.
13
“Sketch that Graph” #3 A grizzly bear meanders slowly through the meadow, stops when he smells some fragrant berries, then continues on his way. Sketch the graph of this motion in the horizontal direction.
14
“Sketch that Graph” #4 Brittany was driving at 60 mph and crashed into a tree. One hour later, an ambulance came and took her to the hospital at 80 mph. After her checkup, she was ok and took a taxi home at 50 mph.
15
Write one example of a velocity and one example of a speed
Speed vs. Velocity Write one example of a velocity and one example of a speed
16
Challenge question What is the instantaneous speed of the object at 15 seconds?
17
Challenge question What is the average speed of the object?
18
In physics, a “point of view” is called Frame of Reference (FOR)
Reference frame Speed is relative! This means that how fast/slow an object moves depends on the watcher’s “point of view” In physics, a “point of view” is called Frame of Reference (FOR)
19
Examples of Frames of Reference Points of View
What are different points of view of a person riding a bus? What about of a boat? With reference to… A river? A person on land? The person in the boat?

A boy rides his skateboard down the sidewalk at 3m/s north.
Practice Problem A boy rides his skateboard down the sidewalk at 3m/s north. How fast is the boy moving relative to someone standing on the sidewalk? What is the boy’s speed relative to the skateboard?
21
Practice Problem #2 Train pulls into station at 40m/s. As the train moves, a passenger walks at 2m/s towards the front of the train. What is the speed of the walking passenger relative to the passengers on the train? What is the speed of the walking passenger relative to people waiting on the platform?

Practice Problem #3 Sam is standing in the back of a pick-up truck traveling at 35m/s. He throws apples backwards off the truck as it moves. Everyone knows Sam can throw apples at a speed of 12m/s every time. What is the speed of the apple before it is thrown relative to Sam? SHOW YOUR WORK!! (draw a picture) What is the speed of the apple as it is thrown relative to Sam? SHOW YOUR WORK!! What is the speed of the apple as it is thrown relative to Sam’s friend across the street? SHOW YOUR WORK!!

Practice Problem #4 You are pulling your little brother in his red wagon. He has a ball, and he throws it straight up into the air while you are pulling him forward at a constant speed. What will the path of the ball look like to your little brother? SKETCH IT! A little girl is standing on the sidewalk watching. What will the path of the ball look like to her? SKETCH IT! If your brother throws the ball forward at a velocity of 2.0m/s while you are pulling the wagon at a velocity of 4.0m/s, at what speed does the girl see the ball move?
25
Speed of the planets Boeing 747 – 550 mph
Concorde Supersonic Transport – mph UKgG9c What about the Earth??
26
Speed of Earth 93.5 million miles from the sun
In 365 days, the Earth travels million miles Speed of Earth = 67,000 mph Why don’t we feel this speed? Orbiting solar system:
27
What about the other planets?
Mercury = 107,700 mph Pluto = 10,700 mph But what about from our frame of reference?
28
Cool recent event: the first landing on a comet!
landing-full-coverage.html Chasing a comet The probe took 10 years to reach its destination!! Speed of comet = 80,000 mph
