1 Energy Vocabulary Unit 2.1 2017

2 Learning target Students will explain the relationship between potential and kinetic energy.

3 Energy The ability to do work or cause change. (Work – the movement of an object through a distance).

4 Science Video for Kids: What Is Energy?

5 The Law of Conservation of Energy
In physics, the law of conservation of energy states that the energy can not be created or destroyed, only transformed.

6 Law of Conservation of Energy (Roller Coaster Demo)

7 Kinetic Energy Energy of motion. Determined by an objects velocity
and mass.

8 Potential Energy This is stored energy. Determined by an objects height, gravity and mass. Ex: A bike on top of a hill.

9

10 Gravitational Potential Energy
Same a Potential Energy. This is stored energy. Determined by an objects height, gravity and mass.

11 Potential and Kinetic Energy for Kids

12 Energy Transformation
Energy can be transformed (changed) from one form to another. EX: Flipping a switch to turn on a light.

14 How does energy convert? - Studi Physics

15 Speed A measurement of how fast an object moves over time.
It does not have a direction. Example – The racecar was driving at 160mph around the track.

16 Velocity The speed of an object in a certain direction.
Example – The car was driving 160 mph northeast around the track.

17 Mass A measure of how much matter is in an object.

18 Gravity A force which tries to pull two objects toward each other.
Anything which has mass also has a gravitational pull. The more massive an object is, the stronger its gravitational pull is.

19 Joule The basic unit of energy, and is equal to Kg (meters per second). An example of joule is what a scientist would use to measure energy.

20 How much energy is in a joule?
