2 Bonding Ionic Bonds Core charge assumes that non valence electrons shield part of the nuclear charge. Our model neglects inner electrons because they don’t contribute to the chemistry Consider two atoms, one Na and on Cl. Neutral Na has a positive core and 1 valence electron. Neutral Cl has 7+ core with 7 valence electrons. These features are illustrated on the left using the Lewis dot structure. Moving one electron complete from Na to Cl leaves two ions. Na+ Cation Cl- Anion The ideal ionic bond has on atom incorporating the electron completely into its structure thereby creating two ions. The atoms are held together as a molecule by the attraction of the charge (+ to -). January 18, 2019 GSCI 163 Spring 2010

3 Covalent Bonds Core charge assumes that non valence electrons shield part of the nuclear charge. Our model neglects inner electrons because they don’t contribute to the chemistry Consider two identicla atoms, Cl. Neutral Cl has 7+ core with 7 valence electrons. These features are illustrated on the left using the Lewis dot structure. Sharing an electrons, one from each atom fills the shells. January 18, 2019 GSCI 163 Spring 2010

4 Metallic Bonds Metal atoms form a lattice
Different crystal structures possible. Electrons can be thought of as a gas bound to the lattice and not any individual atom. January 18, 2019 GSCI 163 Spring 2010
