1 Unit 2, Lesson 2: Classifying Matter

2 A Few More Definitions... Atom: the smallest possible unit of an element that retains the fundamental properties of the element. Molecule: a cluster of two or more atoms held together strongly by electrical forces. Ion: an atom or molecule that possesses an electrical charge. Particle: a general term used to describe a small bit of matter such as an atom, molecule, or ion.

3 Try This! Identify the atoms, molecules, and the ions: NO3- Cl- H2O Ag
5 min C12H22O11 Cu CH3CH2OH Na+

4 Brain Break!

5 Flow Chart Activity Without looking at your textbook, follow the instructions and complete the activity on today’s handout. Start by explaining what a flow chart is (eg. trees). Individual, then go over answers - 15 min

6 Components of Solutions
A solution is made up of a solvent and a solute. The solvent is the component of a solution that exists in the greater quantity. The solute is the component of a solution that exists in the smaller quantity. When the solvent is water, the solution is called an aqueous solution. Tip for remembering: solvent is a longer word than solute. – 5 min

7 Homework: Pg. 52 #33, 36, 39-41, and 44 10 min
