Officials Number Elected – Term Length Duties and Responsibilities Consuls: Two elected for 1 year terms Executive officials – Led the Roman Army Praetors: Eight elected for 1 year – later for life Responsible for the administration of law Quaestors: Twenty elected for 1 year Financial officials – administer treasury Aediles: Four elected for 1 year Run maintenance and repair of public buildings Tribunes of the Plebians: Two-Four then ten elected from Plebians for 1 year Summoned meetings of the Plebian Councik Censors: Two elected for 18 months Administer census of property and citizen Legislative Bodies: Number elected and/or for fixed rate of time Various duties Senate: 100 in early Republic – then 300 then 900 – served for life Decrees the force of the laws Popular Assemblies Assembly = All Plebians Tributa – Centuriata Curiata – Plebis Selected the 4 Tribunes Populares Centurale Assemblies: Decided on War/ Peace Elected higher officials. Council of the Plebians: Started in 287 B.C Its resolutions are binding on all citizens.
