1 KQ: What is The impact of changes in employment in the countryside
The case of Scotland KQ: What is The impact of changes in employment in the countryside

2 Starter: Photo Analysis
You have been given an image of a rural area in Scotland. Task: Annotate Grade C – Describe what problems might occur regarding employment in areas such as these? Grade A – Explain what problems might occur regarding employment in such areas. **Remember what the key command words describe and explain mean.

3 Problems that might occur regarding employment in rural areas
Here are a few ideas... Remote: Can people easily visit? Links to the rest of the world: Can I get my message / product out to the public? Communication: What about internet access?

4 Changes in employment - Scotland
People living in the countryside in developed countries have seen big changes in employment. In Scotland, for example, the main changes have been: A decline in the traditional (primary) jobs – farming, fishing and forestry. Why do you think this is the case? A growth in a few areas of new, often high tech (quartenary), industries. Why do you think this is the case?

5 Urban to rural migration
More recently people have started to move back into some rural areas. In pairs, come up with some ideas as to why this might be the case (think push / pull factors). Did your ideas include: Government action – largely in the form of grants Growth of tourism and other outdoor activities An influx of retired people And an influx of people seeking a better life but who can work from home **To reinforce these ideas – you can read page 187 Evolving Planet.

6 Promoting Tourism in the countryside
So much of the recovery in rural areas is based on the creation of new jobs, especially in tourism or people who can use new technologies such as telecommunications to work from rural areas. Watch the video clip –Beautiful Scotland Working in pairs discuss the pros and cons of developing tourism on a large scale in the countryside (draw a table up of your ideas) Create a poster that encourages people to come to rural Scotland (pull reasons)– complete for homework.

7 Finally... Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages for developing tourism in rural areas. Be prepared to support your answer.
