1 Ms. Fernandez needs to pick up 9 nectarines for a recipe she is making
Ms. Fernandez needs to pick up 9 nectarines for a recipe she is making. Last time she bought nectarines, she bought 6 nectarines for $2. Assuming they are the same price, how much can she expect to pay? 6 __ 3 ÷2 = __ __ 1 2 ÷2 = What two items are we comparing? (animations 1 and 2) SMS: nectarines and cost/dollars What do we know about them? (animations 3 and 4) SMS: Six nectarines cost 2 dollars Since we are comparing them, we can set up a ratio. In this case, we showed the ratio as a fraction. Now, if you we going to evenly split the nectarines between the dollars, something like this would happen…. (animation 5) How many nectarines do you get for every dollar? (animation 6) SMS: 3 nectarines So, we have this 6/2…. And it’ll turn into 3 nectarines per dollar. How could you do this mathematically? Turn and talk to your partner. Go! So, what do we do? SMS: Divide the numerator and denominator by 2 or divide by 2/2. Good! (animation 7) Is this 3nectarines/dollar our final answer? Why or why not? SMS: No, because we are trying to find the cost of 9 nectarines.

2 3 1 3 3 9 3 x = x = Ms. Fernandez will pay $3 for 9 nectarines
Ms. Fernandez needs to pick up 9 nectarines for a recipe she is making. Last time she bought nectarines, she bought 6 nectarines for $2. Assuming they are the same price, how much can she expect to pay? 3 1 x 3 3 = 9 Ms. Fernandez will pay $3 for 9 nectarines 3 x = So we have this 3 nectarines/dollar….. What is the question asking us for? (animation 1) SMS: How much does 9 nectarines cost? And if we want to increase the nectarines, we’ll also increase the dollars….. Sort of like this… (animation 2) Thinking about what we did before, what is the next thing you can do? Turn and talk to your partner. What can we do? (animation 3) SMS: Multiply the numerator and denominator by 3 or by 3/3 And what does that get us? (animation 4) SMS: 9/3 Is this 9/3 our final answer? (nope!) What is the answer? (3 dollars) Can you put that in an “mmm sentence”? (animation 5) SMS: The final answer is 9 nectarines cost $3.
