1 HYPOTHESIS, THEORIES AND LAWS

2 A statement that predicts the outcome of an investigation
HYPOTHESIS A statement that predicts the outcome of an investigation (If we do this, then this will happen)

3 EXAMPLES: If the temperature of a gas is increased, then the volume will increase. If the length of a pendulum increases, then the period of swing will decrease. If runners drink water and run in a race, then they will run faster than runners who drink a sports drink.

4 SCIENTIFIC THEORIES A theory is an explanation of a set of related observations or events based upon proven hypotheses and verified multiple times by detached groups of researchers. One scientist cannot create a theory; she can only create a hypothesis. In experimental sciences, a theory can never be "proved", it can only be "disproved" by experiment.

5 EXAMPLES The theory of evolution The theory of relativity The atomic theory The quantum theory

6 SCIENTIFIC LAWS Are statements of fact meant to explain, in concise terms, an action or set of actions. Are generally accepted to be true and universal, and can sometimes be expressed in terms of a single mathematical equation.

7 EXAMPLES Newton’s Three Laws of Motion The Laws of Thermodynamics
Boyle's law of gases The law of conservation of mass and energy Hooke’s law of elasticity Galileo's law of free fall Kepler's three laws of planetary motion Newton's law of gravitation
