Now we will study Sound in detail!
Recall that Simple Harmonic Motion is at the root of waves We will revisit waves in general (including traveling waves and standing waves) Longitudinal Transverse Waves on a taut string Light (chapter 24) Now we will study Sound in detail!
2
WAVES: All that we learned about waves for transverse waves on strings, we will still use and also apply to sound waves in air Traveling waves Note features such as amplitude, wavelength, frequency Relate speed to wavelength and frequency Calculate the specific speed of a transverse wave on a taut string Calculate the speed of sound waves in air Standing waves Know how a standing wave is produced Know different standing wave patterns for guitar strings and organ pipes (and be able to make calculations related to wavelength and frequency)
3
WE WILL STUDY THE FOLLOWING WAVE PHENOMENA (as they apply to sound waves)
Beats Periodic variation in loudness from waves of slightly different frequency Doppler Effect Shift in frequency of a wave from motion of the source or receiver of waves
