SAFE WORK INSTRUCTIONS
The following safe work instructions is NOT INTENDED to replace hands on training requirements of the code of federal regulations. The intent is to provide an overview of known potential safety hazards associated with equipment operation. Hands on training with an experienced operator on each specific model must be conducted. The trainee can not proceed onto production until they are determined ready to proceed by the supervisor of the training. Before any operation or maintenance procedure is performed with or on this equipment, it is important that personnel have a complete understanding of the location and functions of all controls and indicators, as well as, the location and use of all emergency shutdown controls and procedures.
Steps for Initial SWI Training:
Prepare – Review the SWI.
Present – Quick Card at the machine with experienced operator.
Tryout – Person runs the machine with supervision.
Follow up – Competency points are verified by supervisor and is signed by the trainee/trainer to complete the training.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Pre-Op Checks:
Visually check shearer cable from headgate to shearer. Also check cable handler, panline, face conveyor, and roof and rib conditions.
Restraining clamp at shearer.
Maintain proper oil levels in the ranging arms and gear cases to ensure proper operation.
Test the water and fire sprays for minimum number of working sprays and minimum spray pressures.
Examine the face conveyor for loose, missing or damaged flights.
Check cable handler for breaks, missing pins or clips.
Maintain the equipment free from accumulations of combustible materials.(Coal, dust, grease and oil).
Examine the bits in the shearer drums and replace worn is missing bits as necessary.
Test emergency stops, panic bars and audible alarms for proper operation.
Check for methane at face.
Correct substandard conditions you are able to correct and report conditions observed to your supervisor. 
Maintain water and fire sprays to comply with the site specific ventilation control plan.
Clean your equipment as required.
Check for roof and rib conditions.
Must function properly prior to operation.
Make methane checks as required in the site specific ventilation plan.
If 1% or more of methane is present de-energize the shearer and notify your supervisor immediately.

Setting Bits in Shearer Drums:
Prior to entering into the panline to check or change bits the panline and shearer must be locked and tagged out.
Shields must be pulled in the area where bits will be checked or changed prior to entering the panline.
Prior to entering the face examine roof and face for loose materials.
Verify through communication that the panline and shearer are locked and tagged out.
Maintain proper body positioning and hand placement to avoid potential pinch points.
Utilize proper tools for the job.
Remove replaced bits from the face area to proper disposal location.
Maintain 3 points of contact when entering or exiting the panline.
Utilize shield flappers when practicable.
Scale loose materials when necessary.
Tramming Shearer and Cutting Material:
Ensure that all personnel are in the clear prior to starting pump or drums.
Make an examination for methane prior to starting the shearer.
Make proper checks for methane at site specific ventilation plan required intervals.
When cutting out at the headgate or tailgate areas make sure that all personnel and materials are in the clear.
Utilize proper body positioning when tramming or cutting material. Do not stand adjacent to the shearer drums during cutting or while the shearer drums are rotating.
If 1% or more of methane is present de-energize the shearer and notify your supervisor immediately.
Keep hands clear of panline.
Maintain walkways free from obstructions and potential slipping or tripping hazards.
