King William's War “The War of the Grand Alliance” When: 1689 – 1697
Who: France (led by Frontenac)/New France/Native allies vs. England/English America/ Iroquois Where: North America Why: To block Louis XVI's overseas expansion. Result: England captured Acadia Treaty of Ryswick (all captured territories were returned to their original territories)

Queen Anne's War “the War of the Spanish Succession” When: 1704 – 1713
Who: France and her allies vs. Great Britain and her's Where: Europe and the West Indies (but also North America) Why: Conflicting claims to the Spanish throne Result: Treaty of Utrecht (1713) granted considerable territory to England; Fr. retained Ile St-Jean [PEI] and Ile Royale [Cape Breton], but ceded Acadia and Nfld to the Eng . The treaty is acknowledged as the end of French expansion and the rise of the British Empire.

The Seven Years' War When: 1755 – 1763
Who: Britain, Prussia and Hanover against France, Austria, Sweden, Saxony, Russia and eventually Spain. Where: North America (started in the Ohio River Valley) Why: Britain's war aims were to destroy the French navy and merchant fleet, seize its colonies, and eliminate France as a commercial rival. France found itself committed to fighting in Europe to defend Austria, which could do nothing to aid France overseas. Result: Treaty of Paris – New France is declared a British Posession
