Castle Degenfeld Schomburg

Castle Degenfeld Schomburg, set in 20 hectares of thermal salted waters, was originally built in 1484 by Bishop Janos Pruisz.

In 1896 it was rebuilt by Countess Emma Degenfeld Schombuy and in 1920 the castle was bought by banker Joseph Pincas, brother-in-law of Prince Ghica.

In 1944, the building passed into the administration of the Ministry of Forest Industry and in 1958, Balc Castle came into possession of the Ministry of Health.

There are four main living quarters including the original castle of 2,375 m2. Comprised of basement with eleven rooms. Ground floor has eight rooms, three terraces, two halls and four bathrooms. On the first floor are eleven rooms, four bathrooms, three halls and four terraces. The second floor has nine rooms, five bathrooms, three halls, two staircases and two terraces. The third floor has three rooms, two bathrooms, cloakroom, two, terrace and three staircases. On the fourth floor is the water storage.

Grounds The castle is crossed by Barcau River, water flowing within the castle is from a natural spring within castle grounds. The spring’s water promotes numerous health benefits. The thermal water is coming from the ground from 48 metres, at 45 degrees. Arboretum surrounding the castle has a surface of hectares, 763 species of trees from softwood and 1108 species from hardwood. In 1967 the arboretum became a recognised monument protected by law.

Location The castle is located in North-West Romania, in Balc, Bihor County, easily accessible by the A3 highway which gives direct access to Bucharest. The location itself is picturesque with the region renowned for hunting.
