1 26 May 2015 You will be taking your 16.1/16.2 quiz shortly. Take a few minutes to review the content and/or ask me questions. Today, I will demonstrate my knowledge of how the United States starts to facture politically and socially during the 1850s.

You are permitted to use handouts 16.1/16.2, handwritten notes. No talking Eyes on your own paper Please staple your completed 16.1 and 16.2 to your quiz. Once you have completed the quiz begin working on 16.3.

4 Republican Party Founded 20 March 1854:
Party was made up of: Free Soilers, Democrats, antislavery Whigs, and some Know-Nothings. First candidate to run for President was John Fremont, leader and frontiersman from California.

6 Kansas/Nebraska Act: Nebraska split into 2 territories: Both territories would exercise popular sovereignty

7 Rise of Lincoln Successful attorney from Illinois.
Served four terms in the state legislature and one term as a U.S. Rep from IL Opposed the spread of slavery, thought if slavery wasn’t allowed to spread it would eventually die out. Main political opponent, Stephen Douglas (Lawyer and Senator) from IL

8 Lincoln v Douglas Lincoln runs against Stephen Douglas for U.S. Senator in 1858. They debated 7 different places throughout the state in 1858. They discussed popular sovereignty (Lincoln was against the expansion of slavery). Douglas believed that slavery should be allowed to spread where ppl want it. Lincoln doesn’t wish to interfere with the institution of slavery. HE IS NOT AN ABOLITIONIST Douglas will win and Lincoln is rather devastated .

9 John Brown … {was} “created to break the jawbone of slaveholder”
He and his sons were believed to have killed 5 pro-slavery men in Kansas territory. He is an extreme abolitionist (believing you use violence to end the ‘evil’ institution). He and 18 men planned an assault on VA’s arsenal; he’s goal was to arm slaves and overthrow the institution of slavery. He and his men will be sentenced to death.
