1
Starter Task In your books, in complete sentences - write down 5 jobs that are likely to grow in number to meet the needs of an aging population and 5 kinds that are likely to decrease because there will be fewer younger people.
2
Read p What 2 factors do I need to find the natural increase rate? If I wanted to find out how to calculate population growth rate, what factors would I need?
3
Different Ages, Different Roles
Learning Objective: To explore and understand dependency load and to
4
Roles Demographers identify 3 life stages: 1) children (up to age 15)
2) Working adults (ages 16 – 64) 3) Older Adults (ages 65 and over) * Children and older adults are supported by the working population This is called THE DEPENDANCY LOAD
5
Dependancy Load High dependancy load:
Puts high pressure on society to provide education, housing, health care, old age homes Canada – 33% (21% children, 12% older adults) Niger – 52% (49% children, 3% older)
6
Gender Roles Due to the roles that each gender has in a society, it is often handy to know how many males and females there are in any given society. Why? Extension Task: What is China’s 1 child policy? What does it have to do with this topic?
7
Population Pyramids Graph using 2 sets pf horizontal bar graphs placed back to back for both males and females of a population Groups numbers of population in terms of age Allows one to quickly see the dependancy loads of children and adults
8
Population Patterns Change
Canada’s “Post War Baby Boom” many people had babies after WW2 Great demand for elementary schools 10 years later –secondary schools Pop growth is quick – larger families, immigration high
9
Population Patterns Change
1996 – the Baby “bust” Emphasis on smaller families little need for new elementary schools (with exception of suburban neighbourhoods) Society switched to serving the needs of the older population (the parents of the baby boomers) Health care, retirement homes, RRSPs
10
Demonstration Task: In groups of 3 complete the ISSUE on p.192 as well as the GEOCAREERS. All can be done on one paper
11
Reflection Task: Write up to 1 paragraph in full sentences. What would happen if a population grew too fast? What could it mean if a population declined? Extension: What about animal populations?
