Vocabulary 1.7 Chastain 2017
2
Molecules A group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction.
3
Elements A class of substances that cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical means.
4
Groups The columns on the periodic table.
The elements in a group have similar physical or chemical characteristics of the outermost electron shells (Valance electrons) of their atoms.
5
Periods The Horizontal rows on The Periodic Table.
These elements have same number of electron shells. Going across a period, each element has one more proton and is less metallic than the element before it.
6
Will the Periodic Table Ever Be Complete?
7
Atomic Number The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which determines the chemical properties of an element and its place in the periodic table.
8
Atomic Mass It is approximately equivalent to the number of protons and neutrons in the atom (the mass number).
9
Chemical Formula Examples
A combination of symbols that represent the elements in a compound and their proportions. Examples
10
Reading the P.O.T.
11
The Law of Conservation of Matter/Mass
Matter/Mass can not be created or destroyed only transformed.
