1 1 Let’s Get This File On The Internet (6.2015 /mb)
In this visual tutorial, we’ll “upload” this particular file to a ULM student personal website account. This particular free software only works on Windows computers. However, the process is very similar for any type of FTP software on any type of computer. You can adapt this tutorial to upload any file on your ULM student website account.

2 2 Get The Free “Kit” Folder To Get Started
Let’s get the “portable version” of “WinSCP”, a free “FTP” application. Sorry, this only works on Windows computers: Download and "unzip" this 34.7 open source megabyte file.  1. Open the folder. Then, double-click to open this folder.

3 3 Run The “Portable WinSCP Application”
You will see this screen appear. 1. Double-click to run the WinSCP program. This free software only works on Windows computers.

4 Start WinSCP 4 When WinSCP starts, you will see a screen like this appear. 1. Your screen will probably be blank. 2. To start, click on the New button.

5 5 What You Need For Any FTP Application
Great! You should see this screen appear. We need 3 things: 1. … the name of the server, the “host name”. 2. … your user name, username, or login for your ULM account. 3. … your ULM password.

6 Use These Settings 6 We are ready to enter these settings. 1. The host name for ULM student accounts is warhawks.ulm.edu 2. Enter your user name for your ULM warhawks student account. 3. Enter your password for your ULM warhawks student account. 4. Click on the Login button.

7 Troubleshooting… 7 A warning may appear asking if you “trust” the ULM network. If so, click “yes”. Or, you may see “Access denied.” If so, enter the password again. If this still does not work, start again. What you type is case sensitive!

8 Don’t Be Intimidated 8 A screen like this appears. Don’t be intimidated. Really, don’t worry. Let’s examine this screen in more detail…

9 First Things First… 9 You are looking at two columns. One column represents your computer and one column represents your online account. 1. This column represents all files and folders on your computer. 2. Warning! Don’t change these folders or files! This is your online account. 3. Immediately, double-click on the public_html folder.

10 10 Get Inside Of The public_html Folder
Great! We are now “inside” the public_html folder. You are safe here; there is no risk in changing a network file that controls your account! Always, open the public_html folder immediately, as a habit How do you know you are in the public_html folder? You should see this. 2. There is nothing inside of this folder. That will soon change…

11 Create A Folder 11 We are inside of the public_html folder. Let’s create a folder. Another word for folder is “directory” (folder = directory). 1. Right-click here. 2. Select New. 3. Select Directory.

12 Name The New Folder 12 1. A “Create Folder” window appears. 2. For this example, the course number of EDFN 5024 is So, type in (Of course, the folder name can be different depending on your course number.) 3. Click on the OK button.

13 Orientation 13 Let’s get oriented. 1. We are in the public_html folder. 2. We now have a new folder called (This folder name will be different, depending on the course number of your course.)

15 15 Inside Of The New Folder…
We are now “inside” of the new folder. In this example, the folder is called “5024”. 1. Notice that the name of the folder appears here. 2. Notice that the new folder is “inside” of the public_html folder. 3. There is nothing inside of this folder. That, too, will change…

16 Create Another Folder 16 Great! Now, let’s create another new folder “inside” of this folder… and call it “bin”. 1. Right-click. 2. Click on New. 3. Click on Directory. (directory = folder)

17 Name The New Folder 17 A “Create Folder” window appears. 1. Type “bin” here as the name of the new folder Click on OK.

18 18 Another Orientation… Let’s get oriented again.
1. We created a new folder called “bin” that is “inside” of a folder called “5024”. The “5024” folder is “inside” of the public_html folder. Got that? 2. Let’s open the “bin” folder now. Double-click here.

19 Ready To “Upload” 19 We are now “inside” of the bin folder. 1. The bin folder is empty. 2. A different folder on your computer contains a sample Powerpoint file called professional-diary.pptx 3. We want to “drag” the file into the “bin” folder. Let’s do it. 4.

20 “Uploading” 20 1. A “Copy” window appears. 2. Click on the Copy button. When you “copy” from your computer to your online account, you are “uploading”.

21 21 The File Is On The Internet
1. The file was “uploaded” to the “bin” folder. Any file inside of the public_html folder is on the Internet. (Naming files properly is important; avoid capital letters, spaces, or extra punctuation! File names are case sensitive.) 2. Notice how each folder is “inside” of another folder. This organization is the structure of the “URL” or Internet address.

22 22 “URL” Or Internet Address
The URL or Internet address of this file (professional-diary.pptx) is: More information: Guidelines For Naming Your Online Files
