What is Communication?

This is the process of sending and receiving messages.
Communication This is the process of sending and receiving messages. It occurs whenever we express ourselves in a manner that is clearly understood.

Be Ethical This means to have a sense of right and wrong.
Example: A police officer follows the law and values the safety of citizens. An ethical communicator puts a high premium on using his or her words constructively and promoting what is right.

The Communication Process
Sender-The one who transmits the message (it is sent or said) The receiver: The one who intercepts the the message and then decodes or interprets it. Feedback: The reactions that the receiver gives to the message offered by the sender.

Nonverbal Communication
Nonverbal communication expresses your attitude or moods about a person situation or idea (nonverbally). Example: Thumbs up, a certain gesture,wave hello or goodbye.

Channels The sound waves, light waves and sense of touch by which messages are sent. Example: Juan’s words are waves, his gestures are light and his feeling of comfort by touch.

Feedback Consists of the verbal and nonverbal responses to a message.
Example: After the teacher explained the example, the student gave the thumbs up sign.

Informal Casual, unstructured situations. Examples:
Talking with a friend Talking on the phone Giving and receiving information in class Asking for directions

Formal Prepared for ahead of time Examples: Job interview

Encoding and Decoding Encoding: The process of turning ideas and feelings into verbal and nonverbal symbols. Example: In a formal situation you take time to pland how you want to state a certain idea.

Encoding and Decoding Decoding: Finding the meaning of verbal and nonverbal symbols. Example: When someone asks for the salt you give it to them.

Interference Anything that gets in the way of clear communication.
Example: When giving a speech people may interfere with whispers or cheers. Talking to someone in the hall way and the bell goes off or all the students are loud.
