No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

5. Engage Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish Franciscan friar.
During the Second World War he provided shelter to refugees from Greater Poland, including 2,000 Jews whom he hid from Nazi persecution in his friary in Niepokalanów. He was also active as a radio amateur, speaking out against Nazi activities through his reports.
He was arrested and sent to Auschwitz. At one point the prison commander demanded that ten men be put to death as a deterrent to stop prisoners trying to escape – Maximilian Kolbe took the place of one of the men.

The action that Maximilian Kolbe took was the biggest that one person can do – are there smaller actions that we could do that would show self-giving love?
Discussion techniques - Go back to the Bible passage ask “How does the theme link with the Bible passage?”
Discuss the question in pairs for 30 seconds then invite a response from each pair.
Use quick-fire answers e.g. throw a soft bean bag / toy to a student, when they answer they throw it back and you quickly throw to another student.
Simplify the question - Invite quick one-word answers, write them on the board, then reflect on the answers – see connections.
Activity suggestion … Go and help others, maybe at home, maybe in school. Do something not expecting anything in return.
