1 Anonymous for animal rights
WSPA conference, Tel-Aviv, November 2008

2 Animal abuse and Anonymous' activity
The deepest and most widespread abuse of animals occurs in the food industries: About 300,000,000 victims annually in Israel. Most of them go through pain, fear and severe dissatisfaction over weeks or more. Boycotting animal products is the most effective act against the animal industries. Israeli culture is exceptionally open to vegetarianism. Therefore much of Anonymous' work is dedicated to the advancement of vegetarianism, through ongoing educational projects.

3 The force-feeding campaign
The campaign against the foie gras industry, carried out with WSPA's help, is Anonymous' most successful campaign, and one of the most successful moral campaigns in world history. At least 800,000 animals a year were saved from extreme torture. Timeline of the campaign: 1999 – launching the public campaign: leaflets, demos, media January 2001 – the Regulations on force-feeding are approved at the Education Committee of the Knesset August 2003 – the Supreme Court decides that the Regulations are illegal and determines a 1.5 years transition period before stopping all force-feeding January 2005 – the Education Committee decides that force-feeding should be stopped October 2005 – the Government orders a ban on force-feeding in 7 months April 2006 – official ban on force-feeding enters into force, and Anonymous starts following criminals May 2008 – first verdict against a force-feeding criminal

6 Egg industry campaigns: egg cartons deceptions
There are about 7 million hens in the Israeli egg industry. 99% of them are held in battery cages. Helped by WSPA, in May 2006 Anonymous has launched a campaign against the visual and verbal deceptive information on egg cartons. Timeline of the campaign: April 2006 – undercover investigation May 2006 – consumer survey; launching public campaign July 2006 – starting a negotiation with the 3 largest egg companies September 2006 – complaint at the Government's authority for consumer protection November 2006 – Anonymous' legal appeal has been rejected February 2007 – following direct negotiations, the two largest egg companies has agreed to remove the deceptive content from their egg cartons

8 Egg industry campaigns: egg cartons deceptions
The campaign included: An undercover investigation A survey on consumers' understanding of the egg cartons Leafleting and street tabling Media exposures with celeb help Negotiation with egg companies Legal action

9 The new campaign: the egg industry reform
An outline of the problem A Governmental resolution initiates a reform in the egg industry. The reform will eliminate almost all the small egg farms throughout Israel, and build huge egg factories instead. No animal welfare considerations were taken into account, and no public debate has been allowed. The reform threatens to fixate the industry on battery cages for decades to come, but there is still a chance to change the reform's course. Many aspects of the reform have not been determined yet, and there is much that could be done.

11 The new campaign: the egg industry reform
Background: an overview of the reform The reform seeks to improve the profitability of the industry Self-declared objectives include: "product improvement"; better disease control; reducing obstacles to countryside tourism The minimum size of a subsidized egg factory would grow from 3,000 hens to 6,000 In 2012 all egg farms would have to be licensed; the environmental and bio-security standards are beyond the financial ability of most existing egg farms The Government will subsidize egg farmers with 300 million shekels (80 million US dollars) In practice, most of the small egg farmers will have to sell their quota to industrialists that will build huge egg factories

12 The new campaign: the egg industry reform
The campaign's major objective: getting governmental support to non-cage systems instead of battery cage systems. Outlines of the campaign: Negotiation with the Ministry of Agriculture about determining hen welfare criteria as an integral part of the reform Legal action against the Ministry of Agriculture in case of refusal to take the Animal Welfare Act into consideration Recruiting MPs' support in order to influence the Ministry of Agriculture, and reopen the reform to a public debate Addressing egg farmers and advising them with the benefits of non-cage systems Media exposure of the reform and of the existing large egg factories Recruiting veterinarians, rabbis, restaurant owners and food columnists – to go publicly against battery cages
