In the winter the vines are pruned.
The old fruit bearing wood is cut back and new canes trimmed and tied back onto the wires
This prepares the vines for the next years growth
Fruit is produced on horisontal canes. If they are tied down it encourages flower and fruit development

To encourage light into the vines and stimulate photosynthesis and sugar production
To encourage pollination by exposing the flowers
To ensure sprays cover all the vines and reach the fruit when necessary
Allow air movement around the vines which reduces spore settlement diseases developing
