Education: Questions for Discussion
1. Ideal education: respect for child’s natural inclinations, interests, and curiosity better than forcing into regimented situation. Regimented classroom forces teacher to teach to lowest common denominator. Will simply happen naturally. Teachers: Must be “natural” teachers like Socrates and Plotinus – anyone can be a natural teacher if teaching what they’re good at/interested in.

2. Explains child’s first teacher is parent and should encourage curiosities and interests. Should be a partner in exploration and provide tools to continue it (toys, books, etc.). 3. “require exactitude of performance” – building blocks to help train kids to learn other subjects.

4. Paragraphs 9 & 10: Impact of “regimented” teaching on teachers. Squashes teacher’s passion, which will then negatively affect his/her pupil. Paragraph 13: Natural style of education requires teacher to react to, instead of directly instruct, students. Watching and responding vs. imparting knowledge.

5. Natural method understands learning starts during childhood. Centered around child’s desire/interests and emphasizes that the chosen direction of education should always come from the child. 6. “Work for large classes instead of individuals,” and too focused on enforcing rules. Will not add to character of students or inspire them to want to learn. Doesn’t allow “geniuses” to thrive.

7. Time when he was writing, this was normal Ideas still equally applicable to women A few good signs throughout! Emphasis on importance of mother in child’s educational development, and of “sympathetic” natural teaching, which he relates to the female. 8. Curious, driven to become expert in one or more areas. Natural teacher and would want to share knowledge. (Para. 4 description!)
