2 Figure 1 A Two-Step Process Activates Atg1 Kinase to Initiate Selective Autophagy in Proper Space and Time (1) The selective autophagy cargo receptor Atg19 bridges selective cargo to the Atg11 adaptor, which recruits cargo to the vacuolar periphery. (2) Atg13 recruits Atg1 to the vacuolar periphery. Subsequent cargo-induced clustering of Atg1 activates its kinase function (star) and initiates autophagosome formation in proximity to the vacuole.
