In one model (left), the neuron releases one signal (A) that inhibits all behaviors. In another model (middle), the neuron inhibits each of four behaviors via four distinct signals (A–D). The results from Nath et al. support a combination of these two models (right): one neuropeptide encoding gene (flp-13) inhibits all the behaviors but other neuropeptide genes (flp-24 and nlp-8) act in parallel to each inhibit just two or three behaviors — providing an animal the opportunity to finely tune its sleep state.
