BASIC TERMINOLOGY In this tutorial you will learn the different terms involved with using a computer in the world of business. The terms: hardware; software; processing; input and output will be defined throughout this tutorial. The difference procedures involved from start to finish in producing a document can be broken down into 3 parts: INPUT (Involves Hardware) PROCESS INFO (Involves Software) OUTPUT (Involves Hardware)

COMPUTER HARDWARE HARDWARE System Unit Monitor Mouse Keyboard Speakers

COMPUTER HARDWARE The system unit is the ‘box’ part of your computer. Your system unit may be on your desktop - perhaps with the monitor on top, or it may be a tower that sits on the floor, saving space on your desktop.

COMPUTER SOFTWARE Windows NT System 7 MAC OS X
SYSTEM SOFTWARE is loaded when you start your computer and is responsible for communicating and managing software and files Windows NT System 7 MAC OS X

COMPUTER SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS SOFTWARE Performs a task for the user
Word – letters, memos Excel – invoices, spreadsheets PowerPoint – presentations, slide shows

INPUT DEVICES You will now be introduced to input devices used to transfer data on to your computer

INPUT DEVICES - KEYBOARD
Most commonly used input device for text data. It is composed of sections: Alphanumeric keyboard Function keys Arrow keys Number pad

INPUT DEVICES - MOUSE Various types available but basic one has two buttons. Used to choose options and to carry out tasks.

INPUT DEVICES - SCANNER
Various types available: hand-held, sheet fed and flat bed. Used to scan documents (photos or text) on to computer.

INPUT DEVICES – DIGITAL AND WEB CAMERAS
Digital cameras are used to load digital images – pictures and video - on to your computer Web cameras are used to communicate over the internet by allowing to see the person you are communicating with. Photos courtesy of

OUTPUT DEVICES You will now be introduced to output devices which receive data from your computer and transform it into another form.

OUTPUT DEVICES - MONITOR
Allows you to see what is happening on your system – as you type the letters appear on your screen. Various styles available: LCD (flat panel) or CRT (similar to television screen)

OUTPUT DEVICES - PRINTER
Allows you to see a hard copy of what you have prepared. Various types available but most popular are Laser – fast and quiet Inkjet – popular for home user Plotter – used by design companies and architects for high quality images

OUTPUT DEVICES - PROJECTOR
Can be connected to the computer to display presentations or demonstrate a procedure as a projected image.

OUTPUT DEVICES - SPEAKERS
Some speakers come attached to the monitor, and some are entirely separate. Your PC may have a built-in speaker
