Reading Children will have two whole class reading session per week with the class teacher when a range of reading skills will be taught. Some children will have additional 1:1 reading sessions with the teachers during the week. Children will be expected to practise these skills independently in follow up sessions. Children may have further opportunities to read with a parent or TA when they are available. It would be helpful to your child if you could find the opportunity to talk to them and question them about what they have read and what reading skills they have been practising when they read at home. There is lots of information about the types of questions you could ask on our school website We would always welcome additional adult support to hear our children in Class 2 read . It makes such a difference! Please do speak to either of us if you think you may be able to help. Mrs M and Miss H 9

Reading continued Children will be expected to read at home at least four times a week as part of homework. This must be recorded in their Reading Record and signed by an adult which will be checked on a weekly basis. Children are responsible for making sure they hand in their record on a Friday morning. This year will also be the first full year of ‘Battle of the Books’. Children will be challenged to read 10 books through the year. Children will be given a bookmark at the beginning of the year which they can record their achievement on. ‘Battle of the books ‘ is designed to make reading fun for the children but also to give them a breadth of reading genres.

Reading continued Reading at home
The more frequently a child reads the better they will become, whether its sat down with a book, a menu in a restaurant or reading signs in the world around them. So reading out of school is extremely important. There are lots of elements that children need to master in order to become confident readers these include; blending the sounds to read the words, knowing the meaning of the words (vocabulary) and understanding what they are reading. When reading with your children at home is it important to discuss the latter two as well as the children just reading the words. Please look on our website under curriculum, literacy for lots of tips and ways to develop these skills.

Hot and Cold Writes We will be continuing to use Hot and Cold Writing sessions to help develop pupils’ writing skills. At the beginning of a new unit of work the children will write a piece of writing in a particular genre (Cold Write) . This may be a letter , a descriptive story , an explanation text or some instructions for example . Following this session , the children will have personalised targets called EBI (Even better if) set for them to improve their writing on their next Hot write. Sentences will be unpicked , similar text types studied , good examples of writing modelled etc... At the end of the unit of work , children will write their Hot Write , this time considering their targets and all of their new learning. Mrs D 12
13
Targets Targets allow us to focus on an area that we feel needs improvement. All children will have writing targets in the front of their book. The children will be told which targets they will be working on and these will be highlighted on their sheets. Once a target has been achieved it will be dated on their sheets.
