2. Direct Quotations vs. Indirect Quotations
The exact words of someone are direct quotations.
They should be put in quotation marks.
Example: He said, “Susan is late.”

3. Direct Quotations vs. Indirect Quotations
Words about what someone said, but not quoted word-for-word, are indirect quotations.
Example: He said that Susan was late.

4. Direct vs. Indirect Quotations
He said, “Susan is late.”
His actual words are put in quotation marks.
He said that Susan is late.
He did not say the word that, so the example above is an indirect quotation and no quotation marks should be used.

Do the following: “ , ” s
Indent every time a new speaker speaks.
Put a quotation mark at the beginning and end of what s/he says.
Separate what was said from who said it by using a comma.
Capitalize who said something only if the speaker is a proper noun or if it begins a sentence.

8. Placement of Direct Quotations
The speaker can be before the quotation.
She whispered, “Oh, my precious Fifi, you are a sweetie.”
The speaker can be after the quotation.
“Oh, my precious Fifi, you are a sweetie,” she whispered.
The speaker can be in the middle of a quotation.
“Oh, my precious Fifi,” she whispered, “you are a sweetie.”

9. Assignment
Look carefully at the painting by Renoir. Decide on two people to have a conversation that you will create.
Label your paper with the NUMBERS of the people and give them names of your choice.
Create a conversation, switching from speaker to speaker.
Use all 4 kinds of quotations in any order: a speaker at the beginning, a speaker in the middle, a speaker at the end, and an indirect quotation.
Try to find creative active verbs instead of said: demanded, chortled, cried out, whimpered, etc.
