The Guidelines for Effective Dialogue
Listen carefully (to prepare a follow up or building statement) Speak clearly – one person at a time Refer to your evidence and where it came from Use academic language Avoid side conversations (take and use notes) Give/get respect – accept statements without judgment

THE FORMAT (DURING THE SOCRATIC SEMINAR)
There is one person speaking. Once you have spoken, you must wait until 5 others have spoken before you may speak again. You must speak multiple times during the Socratic Seminar.

HOW TO PREPARE & BE SUCCESSFUL:
1. List ALL of your evidence on one piece of paper (from your body paragraphs and from your previous research) 2. Have your strongest evidence MARKED or HIGHLIGHTED 3. Group your evidence into categories (legacy, accomplishments, recognition, charity work, humanitarianism, advocacy, tragedies, financial, inventions, talents) 4. Practice using academic language, so you’re comfortable during the Socratic Seminar 5. Listen and find evidence for the rebuttal/counter argument paragraph of your essay
