1 How Sheila is different from Gerald
Monday 12th November 2018 C/L How Sheila is different from Gerald

2 AS WE READ PAY ATTENTION TO HOW THEIR ATTITUDES ARE DIFFERENT

3 CREATE A TABLE of differences
Differences between their reactions about Eva’s death Find 3 or more differences between them and support each one with a quotation Gerald Sheila Gerald wants to avoid making a big deal out of it and doesn’t seem to think it is that serious: probably because he doesn’t want to make a scandal out of the fact he was with a working class girl “let’s leave it at that” Sheila wants to address his involvement with her and knows it is a serious problem. “we can’t leave it at that”

4 Summarise the differences between Sheila and Gerald’s reactions
Gerald tries to react calmly about the fact that Sheila knows he was with Eva Smith because he says “let’s leave it at that”. This highlights how he tries to deescalate the severity of the problem because he is being very blunt and short. Moreover he is probably trying to make it seem less serious because he doesn’t want to make a big scandal out of the fact that he was with a working class girl: an embarrassment in 1912 because it was frowned upon for higher classes to have relationships with lower classes because of the strict class system in place.

5 Summarise the differences between Sheila and Gerald’s reactions
However Sheila reacts in a much more serious way by instantly responding by saying “we can’t leave it at that.” This reveals that Sheila takes this much more seriously and wants both her and Gerald to take responsibility for any of their actions that drove Eva to her suicide. The collective pronoun “we” illustrates that she wants both of them to take this seriously and to own up and feel remorse for what they have done.
