Let’s talk theme 4 theme statements
“Loyalty and obligation to family can drive an individual to drastic measures.” “Feelings of self-reproach often lead to desperate attempts to make amends for past indiscretions.” “The definition and identification of insanity is left to the outside observer.” “A desire for vindictive retribution can lead to an epidemic of vengeful acts.” Break class into 4 groups – assign each group a statement

In your group, With your assigned theme statement:
Determine if there is anything you’d like to change or adapt in the statement to make it stronger. Look at vocabulary, modifiers, structure and applicability to the play Once you have a statement you are satisfied with: Choose 1 or 2 characters that support the theme Find 2 examples for each character that further supports the theme

Example for Pride and Prejudice
Theme: “An individual’s happiness is dependent on he/she marrying well.” Characters that support: Mrs. Bennet Stated about Mrs. Bennet: “The business of her life was to get her daughters married” (Austen 7). “If I can but see one of my daughters happily settled at Netherfield,” said Mrs. Bennet to her husband, “and all the others equally well married, I shall have nothing to wish for” (Austen 11). Caroline Bingley Caroline Bingley explains to Mr. Darcy how unhappy he will be should he marry Miss Elizabeth Bennet (Austen 52-53). "Miss Bingley's congratulations to her brother, on approaching marriage, were all that were affectionate and insincere...Jane was not deceived, but she was affected; and though feeling no reliance on her, could not help writing her a much kinder answer than she knew was deserved“ (Austen 370).
