3 What is an intervention? An intervention is a combination of program elements or strategies designed to produce behavior changes or improve health status or skills development among individuals or an entire population.

4 Cont… It may include educational programs, new or stronger policies, improvements in the environment, or a health promotion campaign or vocational training or individual skill development programs.

5 Where implements the intervention programs? Interventions may be implemented in different settings including communities, worksites, schools, health care organizations, faith-based organizations or in the home.

6 What is the process to create change by intervention? Evidence has shown that interventions create change by:  influencing individuals’ knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and skills;  increasing social support; and  creating supportive environments, policies and resources.

7 Early Intervention  Early identification  Early stimulation  Prevent disability  Positive parenting  Holistic approach

8 Age range of early intervention  If the intervention process is started in between three years, then we called the intervention is early.  But, if the intervention process is started after three years, then we called the process is late.

9 Services for early intervention A child who qualifies for an early intervention program may receive one or more of these services:  Screening and assessment.  Speech and language therapy.  Physical or occupational therapy.

10 Cont…  Psychological services.  Medical, nursing or nutrition services.  Hearing (audiology) or vision services.  Social work services.

11 Strategies for Early Intervention Parent Infant Programs Home Training Programs/ Correspondence Programs Group Parent Meeting Counseling and Guidance

12 Parent Infant Programs These programs mainly target transfer of skills to the caregivers to facilitate early intervention. These can be either home-based or center based.

14 Home Training Programs/ Correspondence Programs Such programs enable the caregivers to avail professional guidance through print media and are very relevant for caregivers who do not have access to professional intervention services on a regular basis.

16 Group Parent Meetings These programs provide a platform for the caregivers to share their emotions, experiences, and problems and to exchange suggestion for problems with caregivers of other children having similar problems.

18 Counseling and Guidance  The process of counseling starts from right from the time that the child is identified as having a disability.  It is an ongoing process and can be used to deal with a number of issues applicable to the habilitation of the child.

19 Cont…  In this process the caregivers can be offered workable solutions and suggestions to deal with specific areas in which skills need to be developed.

22 Cont…  Determination to change the parents perception/ society  Patience  Attitudinal change of professionals  Share the achievement status of child with parents

23 Strategies to build communication with parents  Organized a routine parents meeting  Awareness programs  Community level work plan  Give importance to the parents of every programs

24 Cont…  Interactive programs  Include the parents in intervention process (Education, ADL training, VT, Recreation etc)  Discuss with parents to solved the child problems

25 Capacity building of parents  Arrangement training programs for the parents to handle their child.  Arrangement guidance and counselling programs for the parents.

26 Cont…  Conduct training programs on educational method and strategy for how to teach a disabled child.  Take initiatives of community level awareness/ capacity building training programs.

27 Cont…  Initiate of various vocational training for skill development of parents for trained and skill development of their disabled child.
