3. What’s in the name? On 6 October 1889, Hans Meyer (from Germany aus) reached the highest summit on the crater ridge of Kibo. He named it "Kaiser-Wilhelm-Spitze" ("Kaiser Wilhelm peak"). That name apparently was used until Tanzania was formed in 1964, when the summit was renamed "Uhuru Peak", meaning "Freedom Peak" in Kiswahili. One theory is that the name is a mix of the Swahili word Kilima, meaning "mountain," and the KiChagga word Njaro, loosely translated as "whiteness."

6. Kilimanjaro bits and bobs  Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain on the African continent and highest free-standing mountain in the world. Kilimanjaro has three volcanic cones, Mawenzi, Shira and Kibo. Mawenzi and Shira are extinct but Kibo, the highest peak, is dormant and could erupt again. The most recent activity was about 200 years ago; the last major eruption was 360,000 years ago Nearly every climber who has sumitted Uhuru Peak, the highest summit on Kibo’s crater rim, has recorded his or her thoughts about the accomplishment in a book stored in a wooden box at the top. The oldest person ever to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro was 87-year-old Frenchman Valtee Daniel. Almost every kind of ecological system is found on the mountain: cultivated land, rain forest, heath, moorland, alpine desert and an arctic summit. The fasted verified ascent of Mt. Kilimanjaro occurred in 2001 when Italian Bruno Brunod summited Uhuru Peak in 5 hours 38 minutes 40 seconds. The fastest round-trip was accomplished in 2004, when local guide Simon Mtuy went up and down the mountain in 8:27 The mountain’s snow caps are diminishing, having lost more than 80 percent of their mass since 1912. In fact, they may be completely ice free within the next 20 years, according to scientists.  Shamsa Mwangunga, National Resources and Tourism minister of Tanzania, announced in 2008 that 4.8 million indigenous trees will be planted around the base of the mountain, helping prevent soil erosion and protect water sources. South African Bernard Goosen twice scaled Mt. Kilimanjaro in a wheelchair. His first summit, in 2003, took nine days; his second, four years later, took only six. Born with cerebral palsy, Goosen used a modified wheelchair, mostly without assistance, to climb the mountain. Approximately 25,000 people attempt to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro annually. Approximately two-thirds are successful. Altitude-related problems is the most common reason climbers turn back.

8. Day 1: Mountain Inn Moshi Situated a few km east of Moshi, close to main road, with a beautiful garden, pool, bar, restaurant.

9. Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp (2780m) Lemosho Route is relatively new. It starts on the Western side of Mount Kilimanjaro at the Londorossi Gate and was introduced as an alternative to the Shira Route which begins at a higher, more challenging altitude. The route is one of the few where groups may be accompanied on the first day by an armed ranger, as the forests around the Lemosho Glades are inhabited by buffalo, elephant and other wildlife. The minimum duration for the Lemosho route is 6 days, however we strongly recommend hiking the route in 7 days. The additional 7th day will give your body more time to acclimatize, reducing the effects of altitude sickness and give you more time to rest before attempting the summit

10. Day 3: Shira Camp ONE (3500m) Shira Camp 1 on the western side. The hike begins in the tropical rainforest and sojourns quite quickly into a shrubland setting. Some people refer to this zone on Kilimanjaro as moorland or low-alpine landscape. There are many possible slight variations to the Shira route, so don't be surprised if you see an itinerary that mentions different camps and different heights

11. Day 4: Moir Camp (4140m) Moir Hut Camp is a less frequented camp on Kilimanjaro and is only used on the Lemosho Route. It’s situated at the base of Lent Hills and the immediate area surrounding the camp provides some excellent walks that offer climbers an excellent opportunity to acclimatise.

12. Day 5: Pofu Camp (4030m) Pofu camp is an overnight resting point or campsite that is located on mount Kilimanjaro, at the base of Kibo volcanic peak. The camp is located on the northern side of Uhuru peak(highest point in Africa) and when compared to the more famous routes of Kilimanjaro

13. Day 6: Third Cave Camp (3935m) Third Cave Camp is the third nights campsite for the Rongai route. Third cave campsite is an overnight resting point on mount Kilimanjaro that is used by hikers on the Rongai and Northern circuit routes. It is the third campsite on the Rongai route, after the Second cave campsite and is used by the shortest variation of the route that does not go through the Mawenzi tarn campsite. For those on the longest - Northern route, this campsite is the sixth, coming right after pofu camp.

14. Day 7: Kibo Camp (4700m) Kibo Safari Camp is a luxury tented camp in Amboseli National Park at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Kibo Safari Camp has 73 self-contained tents for single, double, triple and family accommodation. The beds have been custom designed and locally made using bush logs and will ensure a good night’s sleep!

15. Day 8: Millenium Camp (3820m) or Mweka Camp (3080m) Millenium Camp (3,800m/12,600ft) to Mweka Gate (1,600m/5,400ft). Distance: 14km/11mi, 5-7 hours. Altitude: 2,200m/7,200ft down in elevation. It is a camp used on the descent of Shira, Lemosho, Machame and Umbwe Routes.
