2. Personal Pronouns
You have already seen that personal verb endings usually function as subject pronouns in Latin:
amo: I love
amas: you love
amat: he/she/ it loves
amamus: we love
amatis: y’all love
amant: they love

3. Personal Pronouns
However, when you want to show EMPHASIS or SHARP CONTRAST between subjects, Latin uses the personal pronouns
ego (I)
tu (you)
is, ea, id (he, she, it)*
*We’ll tackle the declension of is/ea/id later on. For right now, let’s learn the declensions of ego and tu.

9. Pronoun Uses
Pronouns use the same cases as nouns. Remember your cases uses!
Nominative: subjects, predicate nominatives
I like the cookie, but Sheila does not.
Ego crustulam amo, sed Sheila non amat.

10. Genitive: “of….”
A few of us carried the lumber. Pauci nostrum materiam portaverunt.

11. Nota Bene!
Do not use the genitive personal pronouns to show possession. Use the possessive adjectives instead. You’ve already learned these:
meus, mea, meum: my
tuus, tua, tuum: your
noster, nostra, nostrum: our
vester, vestra, vestrum: your
We loved our queen.
Nostram reginam amavimus. .

12. Dative: to/for, indirect objects
The boy gave me flowers.
Puer mihi flores donavit.

13. Accusative: direct objects, obj. of prepositions
I love you!
Te amo.

14. Ablative: means, obj. of prepositions
Come to town with us. Veni ad oppidum nobiscum.
