Concentration Camps Cody, Harris, Skye and Kendal

2 What were concentration camps?
Concentration camps were prison like areas where a plethora of ‘undesired’ people were sent to be punished and used as slaves for the Nazi’s.

3 Who was sent there? There were various groups of people sent to these camps for example; Jews, Poles, Gypsies, Soviets, Jehovah's Witnesses, ethnic groups and homosexuals. 25 thousand prisoners of other nationalities were imprisoned at Auschwitz.

4 Where were they located?
Most camps were located in the area of the General Government in occupied Poland. Many Jews were living there and therefore the location allowed the Nazis to quickly remove the German Jews.

5 What did the camps look like?

6 How were prisoners treated?
If sent to one of these camps you would be instantly forced to perform gruelling and extensive tasks. Prisoners received meagre amounts of food and very thin clothing/uniform. The concentration camps were made of brick barracks to hold prisoners. At often times, many additional prisoners were squeezed into these barracks. These wooden barracks housed approximately 200 prisoners and lacked lights as there were limited windows or worse none. The ground was either compacted, dirty or brick. Prisoners were forced to live in cold, dirty quarters.

7 How did they gain success in wiping out the opposition?
Concentration camps helped to wipe out the opposition as they quite simply and literally did just that. They killed their prisoners through hard manual labour tasks, lack of food and other forms of torture.
