2 History 1950’s: Sam Walton owns a chain of variety of chain stores 1962: First Wal-Mart store opens in Rogers, Arkansas 1972: Wal-Mart goes public and increases number of stores from 15 to 276 in 11 states 1980s: First Sam’s Club and Supercenter opens. There were now 1,402 Wal-Mart stores and 123 Sam’s Club locations by Today: 10,020 stores and clubs in 28 countries. Employs 2.2 million and serves 176 millions customers a year and is the largest corporation and largest private employer
