Istanbul, Turkey

Purpose 7.1 Historians and archaeologists describe historical events and issues from the perspectives of people living at the time to avoid evaluating the past in terms of today’s norms and values. 7.2 The civilizations that developed in Greece and Rome had an enduring impact on later civilizations. This legacy includes governance and law, engineering and technology, art and architecture, as well as literature and history. The Roman Empire also played an instrumental role in the spread of Christianity. 7.3 Germanic invasions helped to break up the Roman Empire and set the stage for the development of feudal and manorial systems. Later invasions helped establish Mongol dominance in central Asia and led to the destruction of the Byzantine Empire by the Turks.

Crossroads of Civilization
Istanbul, Turkey: Crossroads of Civilization As ancient Constantinople, Istanbul was once the capital of the Roman Empire and the most powerful city in Europe. For many, it was the center of the known universe. Situated half in Europe and half in Asia, modern Istanbul is in many respects the center of today’s world. At the nexus between East and West, contemporary Turkey plays a vital role in world politics that will only grow stronger in the years to come. With its strong economy and democratic political culture, Turkey is a secular, stable democracy—an important bridge to the Middle East for the democracies of the West. Geographically, Turkey is a fascinating country in that it exists on two continents. The European part of the country is known as Thrace, and the Asian part is known as Anatolia. The Bosphorus divides the two continents, and the country is surrounded by three seas: the Black Sea in the north, the Aegean in the west, and the Mediterranean in the South. Come spend time in Istanbul, Turkey. Through classroom instruction combined with visits to the great sites of both ancient and modern Turkey, this class will give us the opportunity to study a country that has been, throughout its history, at the crossroads of civilization.
