Citizen Data: Mapping Industrial Water Pollution in Egypt

In 2008, the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency recorded 102 industrial facilities that discharge their wastewater in the Nile. In 2002, it was estimated that environmental degradation cost Egypt 18.9 Billion Egyptian Pounds, the equivalent of 5.6% of the GDP. In 2004, deaths caused by water pollution reached 10,000 deaths. Between the countries of lower middle income, Egypt ranks 7th in mortality rates related to water pollution.

` In addition to being an economic and health liability, industrial wastewater affects thousands of lives whose main source of income is freshwater fishing.

World Health Organization and World Bank information on the cost of environmental degradation in Egypt are only available to the year of 2010. The latest environmental report was for the year of 2013, and it was published by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics in the year of 2015. Conditional availability of information poses a real challenge to a classist issue that affects an immense portion of society, the majority of this portion being the poorest.

The map is intended to act as a tool for data collection and availability, as well as empower local communities and encourage those most affected by industrial water pollution to engage.
