3 Thought Jot Pretend you are a homesteader setting out on the journey westward to claim your free farmland under the Homestead Act. Now that you have left the modern conveniences of the East behind, what sorts of inconveniences will you probably face once you reach your plot land?

4 Daily Vocabulary (p. 28) Homestead Act: Act of Congress that gave away free farmland in the West (160 acres). Hundreds of thousands move west to farm. Soddy: A house on the Great Plains made of mud brick. Dug Out: A house on the Great Plains dug into the ground. Morrill Act: Act of Congress that dedicated lands in the west to Agricultural and Mechanical Schools (A&M’s) to find breakthroughs on how to farm the West.
