Definition - Longitudinal research is the long-term study of a community, region, society, culture, or other unit, usually based on repeated visits. New systems of transportation allow more frequent visits Population and economy via periodic village censuses Relationship between urban and rural areas Comparing lives of those who moved and stayed Information is provided through interviews as well as through local social scientists

Gwembe District, Zambia
-Elizabeth Colson and Thayer Scudder followed four villages for four decades. -First study was the impact of a hydroelectric dam forcing the Gwembe people to settle somewhere else (Early 1970s). - Second study was a research providing access to new oppourtunities and increasing social diffrentiation (1980). -Third study examined social values and how they affected the town’s alcohol habits (1988).
