6. CORTEX Zona Glomerulosa - outer layer immediately beneath the capsule
- in pig, horse & carnivore, it consists of curved cords or arcades of columnar cells.
- in ruminant, as cluster of polyhedral cells.
- the cellular cytoplasm is acidophilic with a small dark nucleus & secretes mineralocorticoids
Polyhedral cells look like geometric figures, typically more than 6
Cord = look like long & thin

8. CORTEX Zona Intermedia
- lies between zona glomerulosa & zona fasciculata
- cells appear undifferentiated
- more common in horse & carnivores than domestic animals

10. CORTEX Zona Fasciculata
The middle and broadest zone of the adrenal cortex
Cells are regularly arranged in parallel cords, one to two cells thick
Component cells are cuboidal, frequently containing two vesicular nuclei
Vacuoles seen in some cells represent dissolved lipid droplets. Cholesterol is chiefly present in this zone. Cell cords are surrounded by sinusoids. Secretes the glucocorticoids, cortisone and cortisol.
