1 Positive Outcomes New beaches have increased visitor numbers and seafront businesses are thriving. The new defences have stood up to recent stormy winters The harbor is now better protected, benefiting boat owners and fisherman.- What are the issues with Lyme Regis? Much of the ton has been built on unstable cliffs. The coastline is eroding more rapidly than any in Europe. Homework Go through and highlight important information. Produce a revision card on the outline. Answer the Exam question How has the coastline been managed? The scheme was set up in the early 1990s. Phase 1- new sea wall built. In the winter of £1.4 million emergency project was completed to stabilise the cliffs. Phase 2- occurred £22 million spent on new sea wall and promenades. Creating a wide sandy and shingle beach, and rock armour at The Cobb. Phase 3- not undertaken- the coastline for this part was left alone. Phase cost £20 million. New sea wall built in front of the existing one. Extensive, nailing, piling and drainage of the cliffs to stabilise them to protect 480 homes. Negative outcomes Increased visitors numbers have led to conflicts with local people who think traffic congestion and litter have increased. Some people think the new defences have spoilt the natural coastline. The new sea wall may interfere with coastal processes and affect neighbouring stretches of coastline elsewhere. Stabilising cliffs will prevent landslips that may reveal important fossils- a potential conflict.
