Panorama High School Summer Credit Recovery Professional Development Thursday, July 20, 2017 7:20 – 8:20 am Library Objective: to provide support for teachers with authentic assessment and grading. 1. Effective Grading Practices - Measurement of progress towards proficiency - Centered around standards-based instruction - Performance on assessments of learning, not learning activities 2. Purpose of Grading Provide accurate, specific, timely, feedback designed to improve student performance. (Marzano 2000, 2007; O’Connor, 2007)

Point penalties for late work, academic dishonesty, or attendance Extra credit points for things unrelated to standards Assigning group scores when students engage in cooperative learning Curving class scores or grades Averaging student scores Assigning zeros to student work Grading homework

Effective Grading Practices
Provide multiple opportunities for students to show evidence of learning: Emphasize most recent evidence of proficiency on standards Use logic rules, not a calculation to determine subject grades Ensure all assessments are high quality and standards-based Develop students who are reflective learners who know how to set and achieve learning goals
