Memories help us to avoid mistakes of the past, appreciate the present, and hope in the future!
REMEMBER!
(2 Peter 1:12-15), “For this reason I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things, though you know and are established in the present truth. 13 Yes, I think it is right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you, 14 knowing that shortly I must put off my tent, just as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me. 15 Moreover I will be careful to ensure that you always have a reminder of these things after my decease.”
Peter understood that memory helps us. It serves to “stir up” to motivate.
It also helps us to avoid mistakes of the past, to appreciate the present & to hope in the future
(Luke 17:32), [Jesus’ to His disciples concerning God’s judgment on Israel], “Remember Lot's wife.”
What was the purpose of the Hebrew writer listing the champions of faith in Hebrews 11?
(Hebrews 11:39-12:1), “And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, 40 God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us. ​12:1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”

REMEMBER WHERE YOU HAVE BEEN
(Deuteronomy 29:1-9), “These are the words of the covenant which the Lord commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant which He made with them in Horeb. 2 Now Moses called all Israel and said to them: “You have seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land— 3 the great trials which your eyes have seen, the signs, and those great wonders. 4 Yet the Lord has not given you a heart to perceive and eyes to see and ears to hear, to this very day. 5 And I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn out on your feet. 6 You have not eaten bread, nor have you drunk wine or similar drink, that you may know that I am the Lord your God. 7 And when you came to this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out against us to battle, and we conquered them. 8 We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh. 9 Therefore keep the words of this covenant, and do them, that you may prosper in all that you do.

Their slavery in Egypt
(Deuteronomy 15:15), [Moses, when delivering the law to Israel, told them], “You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God redeemed you; therefore I command you this thing today.”
God's redemption & care
(Deuteronomy 7:17-18; 8:2), [Moses, in directing Israel to take the promised land], “If you should say in your heart, ‘These nations are greater than I; how can I dispossess them?’— 18 you shall not be afraid of them, but you shall remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt.”
(Deuteronomy 8:2), “And you shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.”
Their rebellion
(Deuteronomy 9:7), “Remember! Do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day that you departed from the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord.”
God's law (covenant)
(Deuteronomy 16:12), “And you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and you shall be careful to observe these statutes.”
(Deuteronomy 24:18), “Take heed in an outbreak of leprosy, that you carefully observe and do according to all that the priests, the Levites, shall teach you; just as I commanded them, so you shall be careful to do.”
Remember Where You Have Been In Your Spiritual Life In Order To:
Repent & reform
(Revelation 2:5), [Warning to Ephesus, left first love], “Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.”
Be thankful toward God
(1 Timothy 1:12-13), “And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, 13 although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.”
Properly order our lives
(Philippians 3:4-8), “though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so: 5 circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; 6 concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. 7 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. 8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ.”

Remember God's Great Love Toward Us In Christ
(Romans 5:8), “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
(1 Corinthians 11:23-25), [The supper is to remember], “For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
Remember The Great Works Of God In Order To:
Be strengthened in personal faith
(Matthew 16:8-9), [Jesus’ admonished His disciples. If they had been mindful of Jesus’ miracle, they would have understood Jesus’ warning to “Take heed, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.” They thought he was talking about their failing to provide for themselves physical provisions], “But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “O you of little faith, why do you reason among yourselves because you have brought no bread? 9 Do you not yet understand, or remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you took up?”
Help us endure throughout life
(2 Timothy 2:8-13), “Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel, 9 for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him. 12 If we endure, we shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. 13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.”

REMEMBER THE TRUTH OF GOD.
Israel Would Be Safe & Strong If They Remembered God's Covenant
(Deuteronomy 4:5-9), “Surely I have taught you statutes and judgments, just as the Lord my God commanded me, that you should act according to them in the land which you go to possess. 6 Therefore be careful to observe them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes, and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ 7 “For what great nation is there that has God so near to it, as the Lord our God is to us, for whatever reason we may call upon Him? 8 And what great nation is there that has such statutes and righteous judgments as are in all this law which I set before you this day? 9 Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren.”

(Luke 24:6-7), [Two angels to the women at the tomb], “He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, 7 saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’ ”
(Acts 20:35), [Paul’s admonitions to Ephesian elders], “I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

As we grow older, our short term memory begins to falter. We forget where we put our keys, and why we just walked into the kitchen.
I have no doubt that some of you have opened the door to the refrigerator, and then just stood there, wondering why you did it!
But, you haven’t forgotten the important things. You remember your childhood, your family, your loves and losses.
And, if you persist, you will remember your Lord, His grace, His mighty works, and His words to you.
Remember!
(Psalm 20:7-9), “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the Lord our God. 8 They have bowed down and fallen; but we have risen and stand upright. 9 Save, Lord! May the King answer us when we call.”
