Reading Comprehension
Lottie was more concerned with saving. Bess spends her life traveling all over the world with her husband and has little money. Lottie feels bitter that Bess will get the advantage of Lottie’s hard work. Lottie has to retire from her job. She starts to redecorate her house to get ready for Bess to live with her. She had fun because she was living in the present (grasshopper). She starts to transform herself-realizes her own life has been poor.
6
Think Critically Bess has lived a more fulfilling life because her life is full of memories and love. Lottie would probably save less and live more the next time around.

Reflection What does the title, “The Richer, The Poorer,” suggest about the theme?

Reflection The title suggests that having money is no guarantee of a rich life. Sometimes the emphasis on gaining material wealth leads people to lose sight of what is truly important in life. Their lives are poor in comparison to the lives of those who have loved and who enjoy the beauty of the world.
