2 In our next brief we will be working on developing a multi use outdoor space for the court area between B Block and the Gym. This design will be influenced by one of the following influential architects/designers.

3 Zaha Hadid Hadid liberated architectural geometry with the creation of highly expressive, sweeping fluid forms of multiple perspective points and fragmented geometry that evoke the chaos and flux of modern life. A pioneer of parametricism, and an icon of neo-futurism, with a formidable personality, her acclaimed work and ground-breaking forms include the aquatic centre for the London 2012 Olympics, the Broad Art Museum in the U.S., and the Guangzhou, China opera house. 8 Tadao Ando Ando was raised in Japan where the religion and style of life strongly influenced his architecture and design. Ando's architectural style is said to create a ”haiku" effect, emphasizing nothingness and empty space to represent the beauty of simplicity. He favors designing complex (yet beautifully simple) spatial circulation while maintaining the appearance of simplicity. A self-taught architect, he keeps his Japanese culture and language in mind while he travels around Europe for research. As an architect, he believes that architecture can change society, that "to change the dwelling is to change the city and to reform society”.

13 Norman Foster Norman Foster is a British Architect best known for his design of ’The Gherkin’ at 30 St Mary Ave, London. His work is most well known for its use of technology and sustainability to create high-tech but responsive architecture using convection and innovative materials. His work has a strong grid-like aesthetic but more importantly, all of his buildings strive to create something responsive to their unique environments.

17 Santiago Calatrava Santiago Calatrava Valls (born 28 July 1951) is a Spanish neofuturistic architect, structural engineer, sculptor and painter. Calatrava has defined his style as bridging the division between structural engineering and architecture. In his projects, he claims to continue a tradition of Spanish modernist engineering that included Antonio Gaudi, with a very personal style that derives from numerous studies of the human body and the natural world.

22 Alvar Aalto Aalto's career spans the changes in style from Nordic Modernism to purist Modernism to a more personal, synthetic and idiosyncratic Modernism. Aalto's wide field of design activity ranges from the large scale of city planning and architecture to interior design, furniture and glassware design and painting. It has been estimated that during his entire career Aalto designed over 500 individual buildings, approximately 300 of which were built, the vast majority of which are in Finland. He also has a few buildings in France, Germany, Italy and the USA.

27 Project Timeline Week 1/2 Task 1: Research Week 3/4 Task 2: Concepts
Week 5/6 Task 3: Development Week 7/10 Task 4: Final Design/Presentation

28 This is a much shorter timeframe than your first project
This is a much shorter timeframe than your first project. The process is the same. This brief includes the Achievement Standards; AS91067 – Use the work of an influential designer to inform design decisions, AS91063 – Produce freehand sketches which communicate design ideas, AS91069 – Promote an organised body of design work to an audience using visual communication techniques, AS – Produce instrumental, multi view orthographic drawings that communicate technical features of design ideas. This project is worth 9 credits, AS uses a combination of drawings from both projects completed this year.
