Also know as the Cardiovascular System

4. Taking your pulse (heart beat)
Use two fingers (not your thumb, because it has a strong heart beat in it)
Place them gently against the side of your neck or the inside of your wrist
Silently count your heart beat for 15 seconds.
NOW, take that number and multiply by 4 – The product is your heart’s current Beats Per Minute (BPM).

5. Let’s get moving! We are going to exercise for 30 seconds.
You may either:
Walk in place
Jog in place
Do jumping-jacks
Now take your pulse again - record your BPM

6. Observation Time How did your heart-rate change?
Walking?
Running?
Jumping Jacks?
Based on what your classmates shared, which exercise got your heart pumping the fastest?

8. 1. Delivers Oxygen All the cells in your body need oxygen to survive
Your blood carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body
If your body cells do not get oxygen, they will die
These red blood cells carry the oxygen

You body cells also need nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals
Your blood take nutrients and minerals to where they are needed

10. 3. Removes Waste
Your body cells also produce waste, like carbon dioxide, and your blood helps get rid of this waste.
Your blood is like the delivery trucks and garbage trucks in your body

11. 4. Fights Disease Your circulatory system also helps fight disease
Your blood cells attack any invaders in your body
Examples of invaders are bacteria and viruses

What is blood?
Special tissue that carries important gases and nutrients to and from all parts of your body.
Blood is made up of 3 different types of cells that sit in a liquid called plasma.

15. Red Blood Cells Red blood cells carry oxygen.
They are shaped like small bowls.
Why do you think we need red blood cells?
These red blood cells carry the oxygen

They are “rough” looking with little bumps all over them.

Platelets help blood clot (stick together) when you are cut or injured

19. Heart Beat Activity Put one of your hands on your desk palm up
Open and close your hand at a steady beat
Stop when your hand hurts or gets tired
Who can keep going the longest?

20. Your Heart
Your heart is about the size of your fist and it is constantly pumping blood throughout your body
It can’t takes breaks, so it is a very strong muscle
Bonus: What is the type of muscle found in the heart? CARDIAC MUSCLE

22. Quick Review What are the three types of blood cells?
Red Blood Cells (look like bowls and carry oxygen – remember red cereal bowl holds Cheerios “O”)
White Blood Cells (look “rough” because they fight viruses and bacteria)
Platelets (help blood clot. Just like how a dinner plate keeps red spaghetti sauce from running everywhere)

Arteries: Blood vessels that carry blood AWAY from the heart
Veins: Blood vessels that carry blood TOWARDS the heart
Capillaries: Very narrow blood vessels
