What is the purpose of a Socratic Seminar?
To achieve a deeper understanding about the ideas and values in a text. Participants question ideas, examine issues and principles, and discuss different points-of-view. Through group conversation participants construct meaning.

What you need to know about Socratic Seminars
A Socratic Seminar is a dialogue, not a debate. We are working together to share and develop ideas. There is no right answer. A good seminar has a balance of advocacy and inquiry. Pauses, wait-time, and silence are okay. It typically takes 6-8 Seminars for everyone to be comfortable and “get it right.” This is a formative assessment: As long as you did the homework, take notes, SAY SOMETHING, and write a reflection, you will get the points. We are learning.

Socratic Seminar Ground Rules
Speak so all can hear you. Listen closely (take notes). Speak without raising your hand. Refer to the text and/or your notes whenever you can. Talk to each other, not just the leader. Ask for clarification. Don’t stay confused. Invite and allow others to speak. Consider all viewpoints and ideas. Know that you are responsible for the quality of the seminar.
