1 Talk Less, Smile More: Getting Students to Discuss and Debate Math
Welcome to Day 3!!! ☹ Try to form table groups of similar classes taught/teaching Talk Less, Smile More: Getting Students to Discuss and Debate Math Chris Luzniak & Mattie Baker @PiSpeak @Stoodle

2 Thinking about your start of year…
...and all we’ve done the in the mornings ...and all the sessions you’ve attended ...and the keynotes, lunch discussions, etc

3 RUMORS!

4 On a notecard... 2-3 sentences about what you will do/change for the upcoming school year Comments on what you’ve done/dreamed of Questions that you have STEVE

5 SWAP! Rumors Find a partner. (someone new?!) STAND!
Person #1 Reads Card Person #2 Reads Card & Discuss SWAP!

6 I can’t wait to reframe oodles of my assessment questions!
Day 2 Reflections I used to think all my answers had to be “right”, but now I think that incorrect examples can be purposeful as a springboard for debate. I used to think it would be hard to create good debate Q’s, but now I think I can take what I’ve already got and work with that. I can’t wait to reframe oodles of my assessment questions! I used to think that spicing up normally-boring math questions was hard, but now I’m starting to see a million ways to turn questions into debates. I fear that I will be diligent about using these structures/techniques at the beginning of the year, but will fizzle out as the year moves on.

7 Do you integrate into homework?
Day 2 Questions Do you integrate into homework? Is it better to start a topic with debate, or end a topic with debate? Do you use debate in some classes more than others? Do you use open-ended discussion questions in assessments? What does a class period look like in your room? How do you integrate debate into “Make it Stick” routines?

8 1.1 Compare and Order Integers & Absolute Value
Aim: I can evaluate expressions with integers involving Order of Operations. 1.1 Compare and Order Integers & Absolute Value Agenda •TryNow •HE Check •Foldables! •Relay Race •Wrap Up Try Now Create an argument to debate Which One Doesn’t Belong: 15 minutes

11 Socratic Seminars

12 Super-simplified Seminar Process
Choose a text(s) for students to read * Create two to three focus questions for the seminar * Assign students to read and annotate the text, use graphic organizers and class time to prepare Make sure that all students have done required reading and prep the day of the seminar Discuss norms and expectations repeatedly. RUBRICS! Begin with the first question. Once that’s been exhausted (or the conversation has drifted), move on

13 Seminar Norms Use evidence from the texts
Call on, or yield to, those who have not yet spoken Make eye contact & speak loudly & clearly Do not use colloquial language. Raise your hand to speak and call on the next person when you are done. Be mindful of how often and how long you speak.

14 What’s the derivative of [f(x)]n?*
Seminar questions can be as simple as… What’s the derivative of [f(x)]n?* Why does this work?* (* Excerpts from the work of Pearl Ohm and Sara Katz, NYC) If Yassar Arafat had actually been poisoned, how much Polonium-210 would be left in his body today?

16 Full-Scale Debate

17 The Roles OPENING SPEAKER Time: 3 minutes QUESTION ASKER

12 Minute Chunks Make a set of Talking Points for your subject Pick a unit you did that you wanted more discussion in: Write four “Debate-y” questions for that unit. Make a set of Table Debate cards for your class Blog about what you want to use from this session

23 Wrapping Up!

24 Top 3: Keep it simple. Keep it consistent. Be proactive.

25 Book Recs? A Debate Book

26 Final Poster We want to share this morning session with the other attendees of the conference. On the banner, communicate your experience. It could be… Words or a picture An idea or a feeling A plan or an example
