1 Goal Setting with OSY – Part 2
Introduction to GOSOSY’s Goal Setting Materials: How Will You Grow? Goal Setting with OSY – Part 2 2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event

2 Who Are We? And why are we here?
Dive deep into goal setting activities for OSY Work with our own dreams, goals, and visions so that we can do this work with OSY Address our challenges and fears around OSY and goals Everyone who works directly with OSY, raise your hand Everyone who is or ever was an OSY, stomp your feet Everyone who is an administrator in an OSY program, clap your hands Snowball fight icebreaker: hand out pens and paper and have everyone write a challenge that they have experienced or anticipate experiencing with OSY in relation to goals. Then crumple the balls & throw them in the air. Everyone pick up a ball and read the challenge – all or some read them out loud.

3 Designing and Following Educational and Life Pathways
Part 1 Review Support OSY persistence through: Having an objective and a pathway to get there Self-efficacy Understanding assets, resources, and obstacles Showing progress Help OSY build a growth mindset and get gritty Develop a lifelong skill of goal setting In Part 1 Rachel and Margo talked about the reasons why we use some of our valuable time with OSY to work with them on goal setting, and the theoretical frameworks we used when creating these materials. These materials take an OSY from “I have no idea” to a concrete plan while demonstrating the importance and utility of working with goals. The title How Will You Grow? encapsulates the concepts of self-efficacy, persistence, and growth. It’s not if, or when, but how – and how can we help? There’s a lot of focus out there about having the “right” (or the SMARTest) goal, but this is more about learning the process of having a goal at all, and making a plan to reach it.

4 Lessons Discovering our vision Documenting our vision
Setting short-, medium-, and long-term goals Mapping out the way Planning step by step Putting it all together

5 Lesson Structure Instructor book (1-on-1, group, virtual)
Materials List: included or easy to get Warm-up: introduce concepts & build rapport Main Activity: choices based on student preferences Wrap-up: links to the next lesson Student workbook (English and Spanish) Inspiration, documentation, portability

6 Lesson Structure Providers do the activities themselves beforehand, so that they have direct experience and personal examples to share with OSY. Sarah’s vision: a home business integrated in my community that keeps me close to the land and learning about the natural world. Long term goal: Dragon Swamp Apiaries and Meadery

7 Discovering Our Vision
What is a Vision? A vision is the powerful reason, the passion that keeps one excited and motivated. A vision may be specific or broad. We must remember that one’s vision embodies an individual’s values and should always be respected. We must also realize that the vision may change with maturity and experience. You’ll see in the Instructor Book that the provider is expected to complete

8 Setting Goals What is a Goal?
A goal is something specific that someone wants to accomplish It can be something short-term (I want to get home by dinnertime today) or long-term (I want to retire in the Caribbean) It fits in with our vision of what we imagine for ourselves Yes, it should ideally be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely, but in this context let’s not waste a lot of time telling OSY that their goals aren’t good enough

9 Making Plans What is a Plan?
A plan is a concrete set of steps or action items needed to meet a goal. “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” Plans have different forms depending on the goal and the process required Plans change!

10 Discovering Our Vision
The Importance of the Big Picture The Big Picture is one of the most important pieces. It provides the vision that drives the goal setting process. Without a vision or Big Picture, the whole process may become overwhelming and obstacles seemingly insurmountable. Backwards design Without a vision there will be no reason to surmount obstacles

11 Creating Vision and Goals
Setting Goals with OSY Creating Vision and Goals Our OSY need to learn that having a long term goal is a vital part of being successful. It is important to know each student and to give them a chance to know you. Relationships are the key. Honesty about the process is vital. Remember that goal setting is a process. As the OSY moves through the process, vision and goals may change, but that’s healthy!

12 Discovering Our Vision
Icebreaker Activity Questions on strips of paper in a jar at each table. Read and answer questions to help create rapport with the group. Main Activity Work on the Dream Big activity. What do you believe you are capable of doing in your life? What are the greatest things you could accomplish given the right circumstances, resources, motivation? Where do you see yourself at 40? Wrap Up Share your work with opportunity to clarify and rethink.

13 Documenting Our Vision
Icebreaker Activity Form three groups. Each group receives a sheet of objects and instructions to identify and remember as many as possible, with different resources. Main Activity Review “Dream Big” statement and revise if necessary. Choose from five options for a visual representation of your vision: Life Book, Vision Board, Word Cloud, Acrostic, Music/Song Lyrics Wrap Up Share your work. What will you do with it? How will you use it to remind you of your vision?

14 Setting Long and Short Term Goals
Main Activities Sort activity images according to long, medium, and short term goals. Compare choices between groups. Using Student Goal Books, brainstorm at least three short term and three long term goals. Share goals with others at your table.

15 Mapping Out The Way Icebreaker activity
Students write about a mistake they’ve made, crumple the paper, throw it at feeling words on the wall. Then they trace the creases on the paper with a marker to represent the synapses that are formed in their brains when they make a mistake.

16 Mapping Out the Way Main Activity Wrap up
Based on “Chutes and Ladders” Identify “helpers” and “setbacks” along the way to a goal Set the helper and setback cards up on the board in accordance with their strength Play the game until everyone finishes (it’s not about getting there first, it’s about perseverance!) Wrap up Identify helpers and setbacks for student’s own goal

17 Planning Step By Step Icebreaker Activity
Read a passage about planning (short or long) and discuss Main Activity Review the work the student has done so far, and what they have learned Complete the Making a Plan section in the Student Book Make a list of steps that will take them to their goal Wrap Up The next activity will help them organize the approach to the plan they have just created. It may make sense to do this at the same session.

18 Putting It All Together
Icebreaker Activity Students attempt to make an origami bird using 4 different levels of instructions

19 Putting It All Together
Main Activity Student chooses from options to organize their plan: To-do list Sticker chart Tangram Personal Learning Plan Each option suits different types of plans and different student approaches Wrap up: Get started on the first step towards achieving the goal!!

20 Working with Plans The plan completed through this process can be:
An organic guide to the work that happens next A way to establish and adjust timelines and tasks A way to track progress for OSY and MEP staff A place for mistakes and learning: this gets easier the more we do it!

21 Reflections and Questions
How can you envision using these materials with OSY? What will you need to modify to suit your context? How do these materials fit in with your current OSY service model? What would you like to see us do next? We are all reflective practitioners I am sure, so: what do you think?
