Semiotics: The study of signs and their uses
Semiotics: The study of signs and their uses. The core elements of semiotics are the signifier and the signified.
4
Signifier: The “pointing finger”: word, sound, image, symbol, etc. Example: r, t, s, a = a jumble of letters The “pointing finger” s-t-a-r star ≠ the actual star. It is in the interpretation of the signifier that meaning (the signified) is created.
5
Signified: The concept, the meaning, the thing indicated by the signifier. It need not be a 'real object' but is some referent to which the signifier refers. The signified is created in the perceiver internal to him or her Signifier more stable Signified varies between people and contexts, (can eventually stabilize with habit)
6
Signifier: t-r-e-e, tree
Example: Signifier: t-r-e-e, tree Signified: (Note that the pictures are also merely signifiers, and not truly the signified, but hopefully you get the picture. --Ooh, bad pun). The pics are also signifiers
